Welland Junior Colts - U9 - Updated 22nd May 2017

Vin Furlong Cup Final
WJFC (4) v Wardon Village (2)

Bit of a shock to get to the final in the teams first season as in the semi's and still in in the depths of winter on a freezing day Welland Junior Colts U9's were 2:1 down against Nunnery Wood with 2 minutes to play when Reuben Jones scored an equaliser taking it to penalties. After a tense shoot out the Colts squeezed through 4:3 in what turned out to be the defining moment of their season. The Colts had been beaten by the finalists, Warndon Village Vipers only the week before  in a lack lustre 6:2 display, so the omens were not good. But what a memorable day the final is at Malvern Town FC whatever the outcome, with such young players for the first time having being cheered out of a tunnel and having your names announced to the crowd - the atmosphere was loud, raucous but friendly.

WJFC VP Final 2017
WJFC VP Final 2017

The game started ominously with the Rhinos in charge for the first 10mins, but a strike from Welland's first corner by Reuben Jones settled nerves. Both teams launched into waves of attacks but both defences remained solid until half-time. Then 5 mins into the second half Welland doubled the score when Henry Hardinges juggled the the ball superbly round 3 players and then with a deadly left foot rifled into the roof of the net. Welland then recklessly streamed forward allowing the Rhinos No8 to deservedly get on the score sheet with a crisp shot which despite Charlie Clements getting his finger tips to, crept inside the post. Then at a critical stage of the game from a Rhinos goal kick Henry Hardinges tackled their defender and from the edge of the penalty area sent a screamer into the top right hand corner to make it 3:1. The Rhinos then threw caution to the wind allowing a Welland attack with 4 v 1 which should have sealed the game but from their keepers save came a throw to the left winger who after an interchange of pases on the left flank led to the No9 cutting in, beating 2 players and sending a screamer past our keeper. At 3:2 the game was on a knife edge and for the next 10 minutes the Rhinos went hell for leather to equalise, hitting the upright and bar in successive attacks but eventually a Beckenhauer like break away from the captain, Solomon Unwin led to through ball to Reuben Jones who's shot was parried athletically but the predatory Henry Hardinges followed up for a tap in and a well deserved hatrick. This effectively killed the game and allowed the Welland to lift the Cup after a great team effort.

WJFC VP Final 2017

The whole squad had battled valiantly in what was a combative game played in great spirit by both teams with manager Lewis Jones and Assistant coach Dave Sutherland policy of equal playing time for all players having lead to a shared sense of achievment.

Welland Junior Lions U10 Mercian League Plate Final - Updated 6th May 2017

Welland Juniors Lions U10s produced their best display of the season to share the Mercian League plate with Westbury Celtic. The final at Malvern Town finished 1-1 and under league rules there are nopenalties and the trophy is shared.

WJFC U10

But it started badly for Welland. They conceded a goal after just 30 seconds and having lost 7-1 to Westbury just a few weeks before it looked ominous. But after surviving 5 minutes of pressure they grew into the game. Midfielder Dylan Tame then rounded off their best move of the match by striking a shot against the woodwork. It was a warning Westbury failed to heed. Just a few minutes later Dylan was again played into the penalty area by his team and this time he made no mistake thumping the ball home. The equaliser set up a dramtic afternoon with both teams enthusiastically supported by friends and family. Westbury had the better of the second half but Welland stood firm to earn a memorable draw.

Manager Simon Barnett fulfilled his pre-match pledge by getting every member of the squad onto the pitch at some point.
He said: 'I'm so proud of the boys and I hope they all enjoyed it as much as I did. I'd like the thank everyone for all the support they've given me and the team this season.

A big thank you to all involved with the club for making it a day to remember for the players.
